In Search of the Perfect Winter Wool Coat

There are already four inches of snow on the ground at my dad’s house in northern Wisconsin, and I’ve been turning on the heat in my Seattle apartment for the last week. All signs point to a very cold winter. I’ve decided to get myself a new wool winter coat to help keep me warm and fill a major gap in my wardrobe. Here are some of the coats that have stood out to me as I’ve researched my options.

Colored Neutrals

Most people probably don’t think of a deep green or a burgundy as a neutral, but they can easily be swapped out for blacks, browns, grays, and navy. I’d personally love to find a beautiful deep green to pair with some tall riding boots. Very english equestrian chic.

This Mango double-breasted coat is effortless.

The chain detail belt adds a great edge to this very lady like Karen Millen wool coat.

This timeless plaid coat from Avec Les Filles is a great investment.

Clean asymmetrical lines make this Michael Kors coat a nice modern option.

Military Inspired

I LOVE a military inspired look. It is universally flattering and effortlessly polished. Thee are lots of ways to interpret military tailoring and they can be decorated or minimalist. I’ve kept these options on the classic side. We only have so many coats to play with and keeping it simple lays a good foundation for accessories. Add a belt or scarf to change the look and feel of any winter outfit.

This Patrizia Pepe coat is about as classic military as they come.
The check print on the A.P.C. trench adds some visual interest.
This Artizia coat would look amazing with a chunky statement belt.

Warm Neutrals

This is the area I’ve decided to focus on for this years coat purchase. I already have a black down coat, and a black and white houndstooth coat, but I have nothing that pairs well with browns and tans. Of course you can mix black and browns, but I love the tone on tone look of warm neutrals. Here are some of the coats I’ve considered.

This Michael Kors single-breast trench comes with a hood.
Aritzia’s Conor Coat is a modern classic
Sezane’s Johnson coat is, of course, Parisian chic.

Make a Statement

If you are familiar with my style, you’ll know I love a statement or hero piece. In college my statement coat was a fantastic mustard yellow pea coat. I was easy to find on a gray Seattle day. About five or six years ago I picked up a great Calvin Klein houndstooh coat and it’s still one of my favorite wardrobe items. In general, I find these kinds of items to be more expensive, but if you pick wisely it will last you a lifetime. I’m not showing you anything from etsy or preloved sites, but those are great places to find high quality and unique coats at a lower price tag.

This Isabel Marant coat in a blue / gray plaid grabs attention in the best way.

Ted Baker’s classic style in a vibrant cobalt blue is a fun way to make winter a little cheerier.

Personally, I’m waiting on my Sezane Johnson coat to arrive. Fingers crossed it does the trick. I’ll defiantly put up an Instagram post or story when it arrives, so if you want to see that please go follow my Instagram account.

I hope you find something here you like or that inspires. you. Send me some of your top coat pics. I’d love to see them.
